Bach Ma National Park was created in 1986 and is located in central Vietnam 40km southeast of Hue and approximately 120 km from Hoi An. The lower regions of the park contain tropical monsoon forest and above 900m the forest turns sub-tropical. Bach Ma National Park is one of the wettest places in Vietnam (especially between Sept and Nov) and has recently been expanded to cover an area of approximately 37,500 ha. The park is well known as an area of high biodiversity and is home to a large number of birds and mammal species. The highest point in the National Park reaches 1450m above sea level and is approximately only 18 km away from the coast. In the mid 1930’s, the French built several resorts and large Villas in the hills to provide an escape from the hot and humid plains of the central coast during the summer months. Today Bach Ma National Park is steadily upgrading its visitor services and resorting some of the Villas to be used as visitor accommodation Unfortunately though, many of the Villas were destroyed by the Americans during the 1960’s and are beyond restoration.
